PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Recycling, for Food

Hilario Ciollera, 40, is shown in this photo washing a big plastic bag, which had previously been used for vegetable shipments, at the Manila Bay near the Baseco Compound in Tondo, Manila. He had picked up the bag and a few others from the public market in Divisoria, a major trading center for agricultural produce from the provinces. After washing them at the Manila Bay he would be selling these to the tune of P20 for every kilo. On good days he manages to sell some 10-20 kilos, earning some P200-400 a day – still a pittance when we consider that he has seven children to feed. The bags would then be reused in the markets, still as containers for food products. Talk about recycling, for food.
