Alternative Reader on the US-led Northern Alliance

The US-led military attacks against Afghanistan have been projected in the western media as "acts of self-defense." We are also led to believe that the US and the Northern Alliance are concerned about non-combatant Afghans since the latter are given food and other humanitarian aid. Are these analyses true? It is important at this point to have an alternative appreciation of the facts.
