Literary Awards Night Celebrates 100 Years of Philippine Trade Unionism

In commemoration of the 100 years of trade unionism in the Philippines, the Amado V. Hernandez Resource Center (AVHRC) held the awards night of Gawad Ka Amado 2002 with the theme, “Centennial of the Workers Movement: Ka Amado Hernandez and A Hundred Years of Militant Filipino Unionism,” March 14 at the Balay Kalinaw, University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Dean Rose Torres-Yu of the UP College of Arts and Letters said in her keynote speech, “Nagkaroon ako ng pambihirang pribilehiyo na maging guro si Ka Amado.  Siya ang nagmulat sa akin sa makabayan, progresibo at radikal na kaisipan (I had the unusual priviledge to have Ka Amado as a teacher. He was instrumental in shaping my nationalist, progressive and radical outlook).

An audio-CD titled Panata sa Kalayaan was launched after the awarding ceremony. It features a collection of poems by Hernandez and read by various artists.

Ben Bernardo’s Isang Daang Taon, Alay Kay Amado won first place in poetry category.  Wearing a KMU shirt, Bernardo received his award.  The piece was read by young poet Richard Gappi.  Bagging the second and third prizes were Marlon Angelo Torres’Laurel and Cesar Dionido’s Higit sa Lahat.

Genaro Gojo-Cruz’ McDonaldisasyon won the top prize in short story writing.  Again, Dionido won second place with Sinigang na Bangus, si Nanay Ester at si Ka Amado.  Paul Alfonso’s Ang Agimat ni Tatay was proclaimed third.

In poster-making, Jes Aznar grabbed the first place.  Short story winner Alfonso placed second and Charlotte Job got the third prize.

Bangon, Sulong Manggagawa by Rommel Rodriquez was the unanimous choice for the top prize in song category.  Sariwang Laurel by Marlon Angelo Torres and Pagpupugay by Jun Mirano were second and third.

Judges for Gawad Ka Amado 2002 included Ave Perez Jacob, Gelacio Guillermo, Dong Abay, Prestoline Suyat and Alice Guillermo, all well-known personalities in protest art and literature.

Noted sculptors Rey Contreras and Lorena Pacampara made the trophies.

Gawad Ka Amado was co-sponsored by the National Commission for the Culture and Arts and UP College Arts and Letters.
