Mangyan are the target of intensified state violence due to counterinsurgency program dubbed as Oplan Kapanatagan. Last June, strafing and bombing operations in Victoria and Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, forced over 600 Mangyan to evacuate to the lowlands.
Yanat Baguio-Benguet condemned the threats, saying that “the state is hell-bent on suppressing those who are critical of its administration.”
Malaborbor was a peasant activist and was a staff member of Pagkakaisa at Ugnayan ng Magsasaka sa Laguna (Pumalag). He was also an organizer for the Makabayan Koalisyon ng Mamamayan – Timog Katagalugan.

Over 600 indigenous Mangyan families have been forced to evacuate from their homes in Victoria and Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro due to military operations including low-altitude strafing and bombing.
The demolition comes as the latest in a series of operations conducted by Royal Moluccan Realty Holdings, Inc. (RMRHI), beginning in early 2018.
Notices of demolition were not signed by any judge and were posted a few days before the actual demolition.
“Even darak (ground rice bran used as pig feed) sells higher than the actual grain.”
“They would call us, three or four at a time, sometimes to the barangay hall, sometimes to the municipal hall. The interrogations would start from 10 a.m. and end 10 p.m., no breaks.”
