Benguet May Benefit from Carbon Dioxide Capture with Bamboos

The Cordillera Bamboo Development Council (Corbamdev) may earn carbon credits for propagating bamboo in Benguet and thus making the entire province the bamboo province of the country. Benguet State University (BSU) President Rogelio Colting, in a media forum in La Trinidad last Aug. 7, said capturing the carbon dioxide released through the massive use of fossil fuels by industrialized nations is the ultimate goal in the bamboo development project.

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (247 kms. north of Manila)– The Cordillera Bamboo Development Council (Corbamdev) may earn carbon credits for propagating bamboo in Benguet and thus making the entire province the bamboo province of the country.

Benguet State University (BSU) President Rogelio Colting, in a media forum here last Aug. 7, said capturing the carbon dioxide released through the massive use of fossil fuels by industrialized nations is the ultimate goal in the bamboo development project.

Colting is concurrently the head of Corbamdev.

Although admitting that he is not yet privy to the mechanics of the carbon credit system, he said the bamboo propagation venture which BSU and Corbamdev are presently into could earn dollars selling these to companies in industrialized countries.

“Bamboo is effective in carbon sequestration,” Colting told the forum.  It helps improve the environment.”

“Besides the capture of carbon dioxide, bamboos also aid soil conservation by checking on erosion, making them good vegetative cover for stream banks and sloping areas,” Colting added.

Colting cited Hang Zhou Province in the People’s Republic of China, where the bamboo planting materials came. He said bamboo craft in that province is so developed, it provides farmers with income. He cited bamboo wood for housing, fuel and animal feeds, among others, as beneficial bamboo products.

Carbon credits may also be earned from planting forest trees, building and operating power plants using hydro-electric power, and other ventures that avoid the use of fossil fuels. Northern Dispatch / Posted by (Bulatlat.com)
