DAVAO CITY – Members of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) staged a protest action in this city against Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s proposed charter change.

In a statement, Makpil Camacho, Bayan-Southern Mindanao Region (SMR) deputy secretary general, said, “The US is using the marionette Arroyo regime to amend the constitution in order to open the country to multinational companies and foreign countries to make use of the natural resources.”

She added, “Arroyo’s Cha-cha is a clear surrender of our national patrimony and sovereignty, and would only lead the Filipino to worse conditions of hunger and poverty.”

The Bayan leader maintained that the U.S. has always eyed Mindanao as its key economic interest in South East Asia.

The group also slammed the government’s continuing all out war policy in Mindanao.
“The ongoing deployment of troops is not only meant to crush the Bangsamoro’s struggle for their right to self determination. It also paves the way for the slick entry of the United States in the mineral-rich areas of Mindanao,” Camacho said.

The group said that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) humanitarian aids are aimed at winning the hearts and minds of the Moro communities.

Camacho said that the Filipino people must continue to unite and strengthen its rank against the ‘connivance between the United States imperialism and its puppet, the Arroyo regime.’ (Bulatlat.com)
