As prominent personalities take spotlights in today’s commemoration of EDSA I, Anakpawis Partylist gave the full tribute to the masses and unsung heroes who are yet to reap the fruits of their struggle 25 years ago.
“We owe the democracy we enjoy now to no one but our collective participation. History can only be created when the people is united,” Anakpawis Partylist Executive Vice President Joel Maglunsod said.
Anakpawis noted that as we commemorate People Power this end of February, people are also bracing up to pay higher fares in the MRT and LRT, higher electricity and water rates, and probably even higher prices of basic goods by the end of the month.
Households with average consumption would pay an additional P18 to P60 from the Maynilad and Manila Water rate hikes, and P30 from Meralco hikes effected this month. Proposed new MRT and LRT rates will go up to a minimum of P10 per ride, or P600 per month, by March.
“Price hikes are best destroyer of the people power spirit. How can we feel any ounce of people power when our purchasing powers are depressed further and further by successive price increases?” Maglunsod said.
“Our current situation still reeks of social injustice – the reason why the toiling masses initiated people power 25 years ago, and the basis why it is compelling to demonstrate it again,” Maglunsod declared.
