Coconut workers condemns DOLE, urges Duterte to probe into their situation

PRESS RELEASE
Sept. 26, 2011

Davao City – Workers with the Kahugpungan sa mga Trabahante sa Superstar – Alliance of Democratic Labor Organizations (KTS-ADLO) criticized today the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) for being “inutile” in addressing the complaints of rights violations of the workers of Superstar Coconut Product Incorporated.

Various cases were already filed against the Superstar Coconut company with the NLRC, indicating the company’s “systemic and wide cases of violation of labor standards,” said Marven Morales, secretary-general of KTS-ADLO.

Morales said that since May, several long-time Superstar Coconut workers were laid off by the company. Most have worked with the company for more than five years, while some have been with Superstar Coconut for 15 years.

Among those who were terminated by the management are active members of the KTS who have warned the company of an impending strike if the company continues to violate their rights and give them their commensurate pay for the work they are rendering for the company.

“We have witnessed how futile our government agencies are, and how our demands and complaints were disregarded by government officials. If they are only sincere with their mandate of ensuring our rights and welfare, they would have made the Superstar company accountable for several violations of labor standards,” Morales said.

Morales also cited the scheme of the Superstar management to get away from regularizing their workers by not renewing working contracts. Instead, according to Morales, the company hired new workers and declared closure of some agencies under the corporation.

“We are challenging the city government of Davao under the leadership of Mayor Sara Duterte to probe on our situation. We cannot have a livable city if the situation of most workers in the city suffer the same fate as ours in Superstar.” He concluded.#
