Almost four decades later, they still remember.
Friends and family held a memorial and candle lighting activity on October 3 to remember Valeriano Caro and his son who were killed 39 years ago by members of the Composite Reaction Force, a unit of the Regional Special Action Force, under the Cory Aquino administration.
Caro was a peasant leader from Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and chairperson of the Kahublagan sang Mangunguma sa Isla sang Panay (KAMIPA).
He and his son Rolito were killed in Barangay Galang, Oton, Iloilo on October 3, 1987. The memorial and candle-lighting were held on the roadside near the site where they were killed.
According to his wife in a report published by Amnesty International in 1988, Valeriano and her son were taken by the military at around 9:25 a.m. and were shot by a military officer just 70 meters from their own home.
On his 39th death anniversary, Valeriano’s family recalled his dedication to the plight of farmers in Panay.
“His legacy lives on in the continuing struggle to free farmers from landlessness, from bondage to the land, and from abuses at the hands of the regime,” Panay Alliance Karapatan said in a statement. (DAA)
