Denying Culpability

Involuntary disappearances, one of the cruelest forms of human rights violations, are becoming a cause for concern under the Arroyo administration. Even the Supreme Court has taken up the issue, in a number of cases ordering the military to produce the victims. State forces, which are believed to be behind the disappearances, have consistently denied having the victims in their custody. “They are not with us,” being their standard reply. These denials do not assuage the suspicions, however, as the disappearances have been occurring in an atmosphere of political repression against critics of the Arroyo regime. “These must stop!” should, in turn, be the call of the Filipino people.
