ELECTION WATCH / BREAKING NEWS
May 14, 2007 – 2:59pm
Negros Oriental Commission on Elections (Comelec) supervisor Manuel Advincula was nabbed by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) this morning for allegedly extorting money from Edgar Teves, a congressional candidate for the 3rd district of Negros Oriental.
Advincula reportedly extorted no less than P300,000 ($6,227.94 based on a $1:P47.18 exchange rate as of May 11) from Teves.
He was arrested this morning at the Comelec office in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental and is now jailed under NBI custody.
Meanwhile, Comelec officer Jason Sy of Valladolid town was relieved from his post this morning for allegedly favoring incumbent mayor Ric Presbiterio.
One of the candidates filed a petition for the inclusion of 946 voters in the voters’ list for Valladolid. The 946 voters are reported to be supporters of Presbiterio. Sy acted to grant the petition based on a Municipal Trial Court order.
However, the Negros Oriental Comelec said that the Municipal Trial Court has no authority to act on election-related petitions.
Sy was replaced by Susan Delongo. (Bulatlat.com)
