The Filipino People’s Cross

As the Philippines’ Christian majority meets the onset of the Holy Week and goes into another period of prolonged reflection on the sufferings of Jesus Christ, it is also worth pondering on the fact that the Filipino people are agonizing in their own Calvary. They are carrying the combined weight of corruption scandals under the Arroyo administration – of which the National Broadband Network (NBN) deal, the construction of the President Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, and the bribery of local government officials are but a few. The weight of all these on the Filipino people, figuratively speaking, is not much different from that which is borne by the condemned man of the ancient times made to carry a cross on his shoulders on his way to the execution site.
