2 More Union Leaders Nabbed, Another Being Hunted Down

The crackdown against Southern Tagalog activists continues as two more union leaders were arrested this morning.

Arnaldo Seminiano and Sonny Gum-o, both organizers of Ilaw-Buklod ng Manggagawa (IBM), were arrested by four policemen around 10 a.m. at Manggahan, General Trias in Cavite, a report from the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) said. Their personal belongings like bags, cell phones, and flash disks were confiscated.

Seminiano was among the 72 activists charged with murder and multiple frustrated murder in connection with a raid by the New People’s Army in Mindoro Oriental, March 3, 2006.

Seminiano was brought to Camp Vicente Lim in Calamba, Laguna. Gum-o was released after the policemen failed to show a warrant of arrest against him.

Meanwhile, Romeo Revilla, another organizer of the IBM in Magnolia company and co-accused in the Mindoro case is being hunted down by the police, his colleagues said.

Already arrested among the 72 activist-respondents were were Remigio Saladero, legal counsel of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU-May First Movement), Rogelio Galit, spokesperson of Katipunan ng mga Magbubukid sa Kabite (Kamagsasaka-Ka), transport sector leader Nestor San Jose and Bayan Muna member Crispin Zapanta.
