The only certainties in life… . are death, taxes, and laundry, as a joke goes. And so Lumad evacuees at the Diocesan Pastoral Council in Tandag, Surigao del sur try to carry on the usual chores, even with the limited food, water supply, soap and space. The evacuees, who have been at the DPC since mid-July, hope to return to their communities in the towns of Lianga, San Agustin and Tago as soon as the military leaves the area. The military said they were to implement “development projects”, but the Lumad folk reported that the military imposed food blockade, conducted harassment and forcible recruitment into a paramilitary group.
