
I was touring CERV volunteers at the base of the Payatas dumpsite, where more than 600 people were buried alive by the trash slide in 1997. At its base is a river where leachate — garbage juice — collects before it flows out to the Marikina River. I saw this trying to gather plastics and metals on the river floor.
