Students’ Triumph: CHED Declares No Tuition Hike in PUP

News Release
March 24, 2010

In a public dialogue with Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raymond Palatino held in the rally of Iskolars ng Bayan from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and University of the Philippines (UP) against tuition hikes this afternoon, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Emmanuel Angeles categorically and clearly declared that no tuition hike will be approved or implemented in PUP.

Angeles made the announcement in front of the national media and hundreds of students.

“This is an important victory of the Iskolar ng Bayan. We attribute this victory to the resounding unity and protest of students against the 1,700% tuition hike proposal in PUP and other fee increases,” said Palatino.

Angeles, who is also the Chairman of the PUP Board of Regents (BOR), vowed that he will vote against the proposed tuition increase on March 29, the scheduled BOR meeting to discuss the proposal.

When Palatino also raised that most of the 233 private schools with tuition hike proposals violated consultation guidelines with students and parents, Angeles asked to be furnished a list of schools being complained in the Kabataan Partylist hotlines and he would not approve them.

Palatino in turn said that they have already passed numerous complaints to the CHED but they will gladly submit the list to them again.

“We of course welcome Chairman Angeles’ announcements but students also promise to remain vigilant. Magbabantay pa rin tayo na ipatupad ni Angeles ang kanyang pangako. If not, hindi magsasawa ang mga estudyante para ipagtanggol at ipaglaban ang kanilang mga karapatan.”
