The National Democratic Front-Eastern Visayas today dismissed the allegations of atrocities committed by the New People’s Army in Northern Samar as psywar inventions of the 8th Infantry Division. “The so-called “Oplan Kahos-Zombie” in Mondragon and the beheading of a civilian in Lope de Vega, as well as selling out “permits to campaign” or “permits to win” in the election, are all lurid psywar inventions by the 8th ID,” said Fr. Santiago Salas, NDF-EV spokesperson. “These aim to put the NPA in a bad light but fail miserably, because the the NPA has proven in orientation and in practice its adherence to revolutionary principles and human rights and international humanitarian law.”

The NDF-EV spokesperson said that it is easy to see the ulterior motives behind the sham accusations. “Who is really going to benefit from these baseless charges? None other than the Arroyo regime, which is now in the thick of maneuvers to remain in power. It has appointed Arroyo loyalist Gen. Delfin Bangit as armed forces chief, and is preparing to hail another loyalist as Supreme Court chief justice. The psywar schemes of the military thus backstop Arroyo’s intentions to keep power. The military wants to intensify its losing Oplan Bantay Laya war against the NPA, which is the only capable armed resistance on a nationwide scale against Arroyo’s perpetuation. Moreover, the military wants to intensify political killings and other attacks on the legal democratic movement to derail the progressive candidates in the election, silence the people’s protests and suppress the political opposition.”

Fr. Salas added that the people must remain critical, vigilant and ready to denounce Arroyo’s schemes to keep power. “The people are outraged because of the open arrogance and shameless maneuvers of the Arroyo regime to cheat, fail or use the election in other ways to its benefit. Thus the people must continue to press for the accountability of the regime for corruption, fascism and puppetry. They must also be prepared to confront Arroyo’s drive for iron rule as it wants to monopolize political power. The NPA will continue to support people by intensifying its tactical offensives to punish Arroyo’s troops and facilitate the regime’s ouster.”
