SC Decision to Suspend Impeach Raps Vs Ombudsman Is A Move to Suppress the Truth

News Release
Sept. 14, 2010

“The move of the Supreme Court to suspend the impeachment proceedings against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez is a step backward in terms of holding erring government officials accountable.”

Thus said Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luz Ilagan following reports that the Supreme Court has ordered the suspension of impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives against
Ombudsman Meceditas Gutierrez as a response to the petition filed by the latter calling on the Supreme Court to nullify the September 1 and
7, 2010 resolutions of the House of Representatives Committee on
Justice that found the 2 impeachment complaints sufficient in both
form and substance.

Ilagan further said, “The Supreme Court’s decision is a move to
suppress the truth. The impeachment proceedings at the House of
Representatives could have been a venue for Guttierrez to air her side
and clear her name. It is a process that she would have welcomed if
she is without guilt.”

Ilagan and fellow Gabriela Representative Emmi De Jesus are endorsers
of the complaint filed by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and Pagbabago.#
