LGBT continues to demand for equality

BAGUIO CITY — Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) continue to demand for stronger human rights protection, equality and an end to discrimination during the Baguio Pride Network (BPN) Seventh Annual Baguio Pride Parade, July 1.

At least a hundred LGBT and supporters in colorful headdresses made from tiger grass marched from Session Road down to Malcolm Square where a short program was held.

According to Pro Gay Philippines Chairperson Oscar Atadero, the Seventh Baguio Pride Parade with the theme “Stand Up, Stand Out, Stand Proud, Building a World that is Free and Equal” is still calling for equality and respect for the LGBTs in the country and other countries as well. He said that the pride parade also aims to combat homophobia and raise the awareness of people that discrimination comes from homophobia. Atadero added that homophobia is a negative attitude and feeling towards homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

“Many people are not aware that they are homophobic. They are not aware that their actions and words are signs of being a homophobic, like disliking LGBTs around,” Atadero said in a mix of Filipino and English.

“Despite the approval of same sex marriages in some countries, LBGTs are still battling against violence and discrimination, many are still not coming out because of fear, that is why the LGBT community used the “tambo” or tiger grass as headdresses because it symbolizes unity, that they can combat discrimination and homophobia together also to call all LGBTs that they are not alone though coming out is not a smooth process,” Atadero stated.

He added that the activity also aims to raise awareness that homophobia and discrimination towards LGBTs can be corrected through legal means.

Clyde Pumihic of ProGay Metro Baguio added that the rainbow headdress is like the stalks on a broomstick, that LGBT can only be strong and effective when collectivized. The group wants to sweep away hate, homophobia and violence that plagues communities. Northern Dispatch
