MANILA — In an urgent alert from the Karapatan Alliance for the Advancement of People’s Rights in the Southern Mindanao Region (Karapatan-SMR), Bulatlat was informed that Zaldy Cañete, 1st Pulang Bagani Company of the New People’s Army (1st PBC-NPA) commander, who is recovering from a traumatic head injury, has been arrested.

At around 6:48 p.m. on May 28, several agents of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP), along with intelligence agents, arrived at the Don Carlos Doctors Hospital (DCDH) where Cañete was recuperating, and served an “outdated warrant of arrest.”

Cañete was brought to a detention facility in the Don Carlos Municipal Police Station, and neither doctor nor health professionals have been provided to check on his condition.

Jay Apiag, spokesperson of Karapatan-SMR, said the PNP and the 3rd Infantry Battalion, responsible for the detention of the hors de combat, should be held liable for whatever will happen to Cañete during custody.
