The ownership of land is in the hands of the powerful people – the landed elites, the mighty corporations that exacted money out of the hard labor, sweat, and blood of the oppressed. They are the bureaucrats, the people in the governments who governed as if the fate of the people is in their hands to give or to put to an end.
Even if this sounds nebulous, journalistic outputs are inherently biased for the truth. Journalists are therefore expected to use as sources of information the experts (i.e., truth-tellers) instead of “fake news” peddlers.
The dangers have always been real. This aggressive troll offensive is trying to obscure the fact that the Philippines has been ranked the deadliest country in the world for land and environmental defenders just last year in an incisive report by international investigative group Global Witness.
Behind his macho posture and ashen face, Duterte is afraid to the core. He is fighting against the prospect of him being made to account for all his crimes. He is doing everything to stop us, the Filipino people, from exercising our right to have better governance and better society.
Rest is also about releasing the heavy burden of yoke of slavery from unjust laws and practices. Rest is learning to set boundaries and saying “no” to any form of exploitation. For us today, rest is also about resistance.
Will the courts show compassion and grant Ina provisional liberty so she could care for and nurse her baby girl somewhere safe? Will they recognize Ina's right to breastfeed her child who equally has the right to her breastmilk? Ina's breastmilk is her baby girl's natural immunization and best source of nourishment, especially at this time when her organs have not fully matured and there is a raging pandemic.
Sa halip na kalayaan, itinali ng mga kasunduan ang Pilipinas sa kalagayan ng pagiging palaasa at laging nakasandig sa Amerika. Sa larangan ng kabuhayan, sa kamay pa rin ng mga Amerikano ang kontrol sa kabuhayan at ekonomiya. Sa usapin naman ng depensa at militar, itinatayang nabansot ang kakanyahan ng kapuluang magpaunlad ng sariling kakanyahang pangdepensa dahil sa pagpapatuloy ng pagkakataling pangseguridad ng Pilipinas sa Amerika.
