Against People Power

By Jasper Almirante/ Bulatlat

As mass protests against the “illegimate” presidency of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo heat up, many of her erstwhile political allies have begun to abandon ship – among them former Presidents Corazon Aquino and Fidel Ramos. Aquino has called on Macapagal-Arroyo to step down from her post to avert an “extra-constitutional” political transition, while Ramos offers her the option of continuing to govern as a caretaker President prior to the convening of a constituent assembly that will change the government into a parliamentary system from the present presidential system. Essentially, both oppose the brewing People Power seeking to oust Macapagal-Arroyo followed by a transition council that would effect a number of reforms beyond a political changing of the guard. It is interesting that Ramos and Aquino, both principal beneficiaries of People Power, would oppose it now that the people are starting to push for changes beyond the system.
