This scene at the corner of Kamuning Road cor. Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City shows in more ways than one the contradictions that plague Philippine society. Beckoning to passersby is a large tarpaulin sign announcing the opening of a branch of Italliani’s – the latest foreign, expensive restaurant to rise along what is otherwise known as “Restaurant Row”. Beside the sign, a pauper chews on what is probably all he could afford for the day – a few small pieces of bread which he likely bought from a nearby bakery.
