As a build up protest for the peasant caravan, farmer-members of Misamis Oriental Farmers Association who have been conducting their camp-out in front of Misamis Oriental provincial capitol staged this morning a “Salo salo sa mga Kabus,” or feast for the poor, where they ate sweet potato, banana and fish.

According to Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas – Northern Mindanao Region secretary general Richard Colao, the feast portrays the poor living conditions of the peasants in their region. Colao said that the peasants who plant rice and raise livestock for a living could not afford to have a decent meal for their family.

More than 10,000 peasants are expected to arrive in front of the provincial capitol tomorrow from three converging points, namely Bukidnon and the eastern and western part of Misamis Oriental. Lakbayan is a nationally-coordinated peasant activity, where they highlight the conditions of the Filipino farmers and demand for the implementation of a genuine agrarian reform program.
