MANILA– The annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Batasang Pambansa has apparently served as a fashion show for the biggest political figures in the country, who like celebrities, show-off their own fashion statements as they walked down the red carpet to the plenary hall.

Unlike most of their their colleagues in Congress, legislators from the Makabayan bloc did not flaunt expensive designer clothes but wore clothes bearing their political stance.

“Old gowns for old lies,” said the two Gabriela Women’s Party-list Representatives Luzviminda Ilagan and Emmi de Jesus as they wore old recycled dark, gray gowns, plus a “bolero” to match “reiterated, predictable lies” by President Aquino during his last SONA.

Bayan Muna Representative, Neri Colmenares used the image of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) as his theme on his fashion statement. It was embroidered on his barong Tagalog, which was made at the Kamuning Market in Quezon City, and cost Php 1,500 ($33).

“The MRT is the best illustration of the impropriety of the Aquino administration when it comes to providing services to their people,” Colmenares said.

Christian Ranque, a member of the Kabataan Party-list said that they do not have their fashion statements, but they know what are they fighting for which is to stop the implementation of the K-12.

“To finish high school is really a struggle, especially to those who cannot afford to study and definitely K-12 will only cause a burden instead,” Ranque said.

Ranque also said that whoever the next President would be, he or she ought to give emphasis on the education of the marginalized people, who are in most need of it.

“You deserve a failing grade, Noynoy – you only got 65% in all your performances,”Mae Paner also known as “Juana Change” said. Paner joined the SONA protest dressed as a teacher, with a giant school report card on her back, which portrayed the Aquino’s “failures” in his presidency.

“If I were to apply school policies, you won’t get suspended – because you were expelled already,” she added. (https://www.bulatlat.com)
