MANILA – Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia, reminded her two sons to prioritize their education.

When her family visited her in Yogyakarta prison, Mary Jane told her sons Mark Daniel and Mark Darren to put their studies first and maximize the opportunities being provided to their family by their supporters, said a joint statement of Migrante International and the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL).

Mary Jane also recounted before her two sons her hardships when she was still studying. Though a consistent honor student, she had to stop her schooling due to poverty. She managed to finish her second year in high school due to her determination and passion for learning, she told her two young sons.

Mary Jane told her sons she wants them to finish college so they can uplift the family and their community from the dire conditions that have long ensnared them.

Mary Jane’s family, along with their lawyer Edre Olalia and Migrante International rights and welfare program coordinator Laorence Castillo, flew to Indonesia last Jan. 11, a day after the Filipina on death row celebrated her 31st birthday. They arrived in Yogyakarta, Indonesia Jan. 12 and the family has been visiting and spending time with Mary Jane every day.

“She looked at peace and was both cheerful and sedate,” a statement sent to the media read.

Mary Jane, whom her parents observed is more prayerful, said she is now a “new person.”

Apart from their jail visit, the Veloso family is also set to meet and thank members of various Indonesian groups who have supported and continues to support Mary Jane as they, too, call for her pardon and release.

Mary Jane was convicted for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin and was scheduled for execution until it was temporarily stayed at dawn of April 29. Her recruiters back here in the Philippines are currently facing human trafficking before a Sto. Domingo court in Nueva Ecija, a province north of Manila. (https://www.bulatlat.com)

  1. Government of Indonesia is also a puppet of UN just like the Philippines. Drug should not be illegal. Humans have the right to take what they want in their body. Drug war is a waste promulgated by the Pharmacy Corporations.
