A student Catholic group in the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) in Cebu city denied that the venue of the K to 12 training where a teacher collapsed had poor ventilation.

In an email to Bulatlat.com, Melvin Pedrosa of the Student Catholic Action of the Philippines (Scap) in USJR, denied the statement by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers-Cebu that the training participants were squeezed into a room with no airconditioning.

“All our classrooms in the university are fully-airconditioned,” Pedrosa said. “Our university is equipped with world-class facilities.”

USJR, formerly Collegio de San Jose-Recoletos is a private, Catholic school founded by the Order of Augustinian Recollects. Scap is a nationwide religious student group, and has affiliations with international Catholic youth groups.

Marlene Mancao, 52, a math teacher of Talisay City National High School died in a hospital on May 10, four days after she collapsed during a K to 12 training held in USJR Basak campus.

Antonia Maamo Lim, of ACT-Cebu, corrected her earlier statement that there was no aircon in the training. She, however, stood by her statement that the room capacity was only for 45 to 50 persons. The incident was reported to ACT by some of the teacher-participants.

A grade 10 teacher who was in one of the K to 12 mass trainings in USJR told Bulatlat.com that there were 59 participants in his class. He described the room as “hot” in spite of the air con, specially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and one of his co-participants fell ill.

ACT is among the groups that had criticized the government’s K to 12 program, and called for the suspension of its implementation.(https://www.bulatlat.com)
