At the Sidelines

On the 20th anniversary of the EDSA I uprising which booted out the Marcos dictatorship, former Presidents Corazon Aquino and Fidel Ramos and Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile are all expected to be in a celebratory mood though they may not necessarily want to be seen side by side with each other considering that they now have different things in mind politically. Sen. Gregorio Honasan will be nowhere to be seen as he is now in hiding after being accused of complicity in the 2003 Oakwood mutiny. It is now known that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not be attending the celebration – probably because she is trying to avoid being taken to task by EDSA I personalities – two of whom are now opposed to her while she is not sure of support from the other two. At the sidelines are the people – the real heroes of EDSA I – who ironically are now being prevented from marching to the EDSA shrine and Mendiola Bridge where the downfall of the Marcos dictatorship was sealed. They will also most likely be barred from taking part in the celebrations. (Bulatlat.com)
