Marikina
Women continue to face discrimination, violence, abuse, and the denial of their dignity. Patriarchy has become so deeply woven into our society and even our churches, that it is sometimes treated as normal.
This is the third piece in a row I’ve written about perceivable hindrances to the smooth resumption of formal peace negotiations between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines. It had been announced in early December that they had agreed to do so in Oslo, Norway, on Nov. 23.
This was the top-of-mind step that Ian Fry, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change, urged the Philippine government to take as he wound up a 10-day official visit in the country last Wednesday.
At two world institutions, the United Nations and the Vatican, despite obstacles, momentous changes are on the way: changes that would ensure women equal rights with men to be elected heads of their policy-making and executive bodies.
Typhoon Carina and monsoon rains have both had an impact on the country in recent days. Metro Manila experienced the worst flooding in most places, resulting in damage to people’s lives, homes, and livelihoods. River water levels surged as a result of severe rainfall. Many people needed shelter, food, and clothing for the next few days. People are desperate for even the most basic essentials.
The 71-year old congregation to which I belong to, took a hit early 2023 when many of our members seceded in relation to a wider struggle of the church that is dividing the institution globally. Despite being relatively small in number, we decided to move on with new leadership and vowed to continue serving and worshipping as those who came before us did. In my view, this experience has broken an old “banga”, which was molded from the grounds by diverse communities of faith journeys and witnessing experiences.
Many people sleep during Sunday services. Many people find such behavior unacceptable. Many other people understand the reasons why many people sleep during Sunday services.
The 'Real' was not Irene Marcos. But rather, an instance in which the academe's complicity in that violent history is being displayed like anything. What the protest action affirms is a space that will not be defeated, that will not surrender, a space that turns itself into a place that battles academic freedom's free market version.
The predator, in this case, is a corrupt politician who had the police functioned as his private army. This equally brutal government is about to set him free. We have all the reasons to fear rape and death to this day.
The separate spheres theory has been rendered obsolete in modern times on account capitalism's inclusion of women workers in production while maintaining the wage gap and other sexist practices that serves the interest of profit accumulation. The separate spheres ideology also has a profound impact on culture, and therefore on mindsets, that it has normalized gendered restrictions in the use of public toilets.
So, how does this contact tracing really happen? In my case, wala (none). It didn't happen. I hope this is an isolated case but if this is the norm in most cases, gets ko yung sinasabi ng matanda na we just wait for a vaccine. For the meantime, use gasoline to clean your face masks but do not add fuel to the fire.
But her death will be a living testimony that terror-tagging is dangerous, that senseless murders happen under a regime that does nothing but to sow fear among the people.
It is not only COVID - but it made everything: hardest. DO NOT MAKE US CHOOSE WHO DESERVES TO LIVE. Because neither of us, wants to hear and utter these words: "maam, sir..sorry guid..wala lugar". (Sorry, we don’t have space.)
The Alternatives to Mines and Money campaign delivers a message of protest to the Mines and Money Conference of big mining corporations in London.
This war of suppression, directed at people who resist what government armed forces call ‘vital installations’ and ‘flagship projects,’ has always been the biggest investment guarantee that the Philippine government grants to extractive and pollutive large-scale industries.
Donald Trump's 'Paris Pullout' was not the first time the US backed out of international climate accords.
Napanood mo ba ang viral na bidyo? Sige, panoorin mo pang muli.

“It’s a bad call by the PDI management, a setback for press freedom and a sad day for Philippine journalism.”
Kapatid seeks to join hands with you all to continue pressing government agencies for expedient, positive, humanitarian action for the benefit of prisoners, including political prisoners, amid the continuing pandemic.
Our country underwent numerous transitions in the past century which saw the rise and fall of winners, losers, heroes, villains, oppressors, and the oppressed. Which of the contending forces emerged triumphant and what was its impact on society? Rather than amplify the mainstream version of history, our role is to find the voices which were dismissed by those in power as noise, nuisance, and irrelevant chatter. We have to assert the need to record and popularize this history from below.
It dutifully served the role of an opposition force guided by its principles and program of action while bridging the agenda of the other parliament, the parliament of the streets.
