Illegal campaigning in several places in the Philippines is still prevalent during the 2025 midterm election on Monday, May 12.
Progressive coalition Makabayan is calling for manual counting amid reports of uncounted votes—due to “undervoting and overvoting”— that surfaced today on election day, and the reported change in software version of automated counting machines (ACM).
Election watchdogs Vote Report PH and Kontra Daya reported that 42.11 percent of the 79 verified incidents received today, May 12, are related to Automated Counting Machine (ACM) errors.
Despite regulations prohibiting their presence in voting areas, policemen were spotted in several precincts in the country.
As the national and local midterm elections start as early as 5 in the morning today, May 12, complaints of problems and violations also flood, with many claiming that some of their votes were voided because of “over-voting.”
“We are a peasant family. We do not have our own land because my father was only a tenant although we had farm animals and tools. I experienced how difficult the lives of peasant farmers were. We really did not have enough even to cover the basic necessities. I wanted to change that."

“As election day draws near, the Philippine political landscape continues to endure election-related violence, alleged misuse of state resources, influence of political dynasties, and evolving forms of political harassment," the APHR said.
“The red-tagging of candidates, widespread vote-buying, and political killings are serious violations that threaten the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of our communities,” said IOM Commissioner Colleen Moore.
“We, journalists, will always be the favorite targets of politicians who are affected by our exposés and advocacies,” said Cagayan de Oro-based journalist Manuel Jaudian.
“When it comes to articulating the problem of the youth, no one can do it better than them. That’s why grassroots consultation and organizing are key. It’s about ensuring that all youth, across different sectors, are heard and reached,” KPL 2nd Nominee Jose Paolo Echavez said.
